What is TDS ?
We keep reading or hearing about TDS. But very few of us are aware about its meaning or even the
importance of the TDS level for drinking water. TDS or Total Dissolved Solids are basically the
concentration of the impurities like dissolved particles or solids in water. It majorly
comprises of inorganic salts like calcium, magnesium, potassium and, sodium, along with some
amount of organic matter like nitrates, bicarbonates, chlorides and sulphates.
TDS levels affect the quality of water. Higher the TDS level, the more difficult and harmful it
is to consume. The particles mixed in the water would not be favourable for your body and may
lead to health issues. While it is difficult to completely remove TDS in water, water purifiers
reduce the level of TDS to make it consumable.
Why is it important to measure the TDS in water?
Calculating the TDS of drinking water is very important to check the quality of the water you
consume or use for different purposes.
Taste – The level of TDS in water directly affects the taste of the water. High levels of TDS would mean that the water would taste bitter or salty, depending on the dissolved solids in the water. It will also affect the taste of the food you cook using the impure water.
Health – With high level of TDS in the water, it becomes unsafe to consume as some substances in the water may be hazardous to the health.
Filter Life – The filter in the water purifier will be more affected with high levels of TDS.
What are TDS levels in various sources of water?
TDS levels vary as per your source of the water. Usually, TDS levels in borewell water are found to be higher than those compared to the water you get from municipality or tanker water. They generally range between 50 to 2000 ppm. While not all of these are harmful for consumption, have put out the details of the consumable levels of TDS.
What is the recommended level of TDS in drinking water?
TDS is calculated in ppm (parts per million). A higher level of TDS is deemed unfit for your health. Here are the various levels of TDS along with the ideal TDS of drinking water.

How to Measure TDS in water?
TDS in water can be easily calculated with the help of a TDS Calculator. A TDS Calculator is the easiest way to check the TDS in any kind of water.
1. What is TDS in water?
Ans: TDS (Total Dissolved Salts) means the level of dissolved salts present in the water. They comprise of organic matter as well as inorganic salts.
2. How much TDS water is safe for drinking?
Ans: Ideally, the TDS levels between 50-150 are considered the best for drinking.
3. Is low TDS level bad for health?
Ans: A TDS level of more than 1200 is considered to be unsafe for drinking. Anything below that should be purified and then consumed.
