Water is a human necessity. It is impossible to live without water as it is an extremely important part of human life. As important it is to drink water, it is equally important to drink clean and purified water. Even though water is available everywhere, it is not clean.
Water from rivers, lakes, wells etc have the presence of contaminants such as pesticides, bacteria, TDS and more. TDS is a word many water purifier companies use, but have you ever stopped to wonder what that stands for? Read on, to find out what it means and what sort of water purifier is best for them.
What is TDS?
TDS ( Total Dissolved Solids) is a term used to describe inorganic salts such as calcium, magnesium, chlorides etc and organic matters that easily get dissolved water. TDS levels are usually measured in ppm ( parts per million). Higher the TDS levels, higher the amount of impurity in the water.
Usually a TDS level of 200ppm or less is considered safe to drink. Ground water has a TDS level of 300 to 3000ppm. In this case a water purifier is needed to clean and purifier the water. But which type of water purifier is good?
There are Different Types of Water Purifiers
There are various types of water purifiers for different purposes. RO, UV, UF are the different processes of purifying water and some water purifiers have a combination of these processes to give you clean drinking water. Depending on the level of TDS in the water, you can choose the type of water purifier you need.
- RO water purifier: Reverse Osmosis is a process where water is moved through a semipermeable membrane to remove impurities and bacteria.
- UV water purifier: This process uses powerful UltraViolet light to kill bacteria. These purifiers have a fast filtration process but it doesn’t remove the bacteria from the water. The UV lamps also need to be changed often.
- UF water purifier: Ultrafiltration technology doesn’t require any electricity. It removes the bacteria, impurities from the water through a membrane however it does not get rid of TDS. It is best to use an RO + UF model for best results.
TDS in Water Purifier
|TDS level||Type of water purifier|
|50-200ppmf||UF or UV or UV+UF|
|200 – 500ppm||RO or RO+UV|
|Above 1000ppm||RO or RO+UV|
Now that you know what TDS levels are and the type of water purifiers for them, it will be easier to shop for one.
